Communicable Disease Centre

Mission: To prevent or control the incidence of communicable diseases

Functions:

1. To record for surveillance
2. To analyse data that had been collected
3. To investigate or detect the source of the cases
4. To plan control measures
5. To take specimens
6. To prepare a report
7. Orders by the higher authority

Diseases Under Control

a. Water and Food Borne Diseases – e.g. Cholera, Typhoid, Dysentery, Food Poisoning, Hepatitis A

b. Vector Borne Diseases

c. Vaccine prevented Diseases- e.g. Whooping Cough, Mumps, Diphteria, Measles,Polio, Tetanus

d. Tuberculosis and Leprosy

e. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)- eg. Syphillis, Gonorrheal Infection

f. HIV/ AIDS

g. Animal Infected Diseases – Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis

h. International Health- To prevent all infectious diseases from other countries.

What has to be Done?

Under the Act 342- Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988

• To notify any nearest Health authorities immediately without any delay on the occurrence of any infectious disease listed in Table 1 and 2
• To notify through the phone within 24 hours followed by the notification form as fast as possible

Investigate in hospital and house of infected and specimen taken

Health Officer will key in information into notification form in the CDC- IS(information system)

State Health Department will be informed

* as information is keyed into the CDC-IS, State Health Department will be informed automatically

* Acute Gastroenteritis is not included in CDC-IS

Reason for notifying disease

1. To speed up the control of disease
2. To know the burden of the disease throughout Malaysia

Consequences of not reporting by doctor

1. 1^st offence- imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or a fine or both
2. 2^nd offence- imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or to a fine or both
3. Continuing offence- further fine not exceeding RM200 for everyday during which such offence occurs.
